Therapy Intervention
What is Therapy Intervention?
Therapy intervention typically implies a process that unites family members, friends, and loved ones during an addiction crisis involving some individual that is close to them. The individual is addicted to a particular substance, such as alcohol or drugs, or has a behavioral addiction such as gambling, porn, or video games. In either case, an intervention may become necessary in order to save the person’s life or create a healthier lifestyle. Suffice it to say, the family, friends, and loved ones associated with the individual are being torn apart emotionally, mentally, and physically.
Will therapy intervention work for everyone?
In most instances, therapy intervention works because the addicted individual admits that they have a problem and are willing to immediately enter a treatment and recovery facility. However, there are always those occasions where they will stay in denial and live with the delusion that they can help themselves. A therapy intervention specialist can help these individuals associated with the addicted person get to the root of the problem while at the same time achieving the goals of the intervention.
There is always the possibility that the addicted individual will react negatively, even violently, and storm out or reject the idea of entering a treatment and recovery facility. If this is the case, the therapy intervention professional will have instructed all the members of the group how to handle this type of situation positively so things do not get our of hand. When all else fails, remember that any intervention needs to be perceived as an act of caring and love by the addicted individual.
Time frames involved
We are oftentimes questioned about how long therapy intervention will take. The answer varies with the individual. Since no two individuals are ever alike, neither are their addictions nor the length of time involved in the intervention process. Some have positive results immediately while others will take several attempts, so there is no definitive answer where this question is concerned. In any case, the therapy intervention professional will guide the intervention team members through the process from start to finish in order to enhance the most positive outcome possible.
Some family members, friends, or loved ones may live a day or more away from the addicted individual’s place of residence so it is important that you build in a 5-7 day cushion to the initial intervention team meeting. What is important is that you have all the members of the team lined out for the initial meeting with the therapy intervention professional that will be guiding and supervising the meeting. Additionally, you need to have already discussed what you feel is the addicted individual’s issues and how it has impacted each and every one of the team members.
