Intervention Definition

What is an intervention?

Intervention Definition
in our words…. Intervention is the process wherein family members, fellow employees, friends, and loved ones, under the supervision of an interventionist, confront an individual about their addiction and destructive behavior that impacts them emotionally, mentally, and physically.  The ultimate goal of the intervention is that the addicted individual come to grips with their problems and seeks out help for it by entering a treatment and recovery facility.

Other forms of interventions

Intervention Definition in our words….  Despite the fact that interventions typically take place to help an individual with either an alcohol or drug addiction, sometimes they are conducted when a person is having emotional issues resulting from a particular psychological issue, such as depression.  Interventions typically function at the best, and have a greater chance of success when they are conducted by a counselor, psychologist, or therapist who comes from a treatment and recovery facility.  If the intervention is successful, the addicted individual can leave immediately and enroll in that particular treatment and recovery center.

Some aspects of the intervention process

Despite the fact that family members, fellow co-workers, friends, and loved ones may try to conduct an intervention on their own, it is usually best to have a professional supervise it.  Keep in mind that unsupervised interventions do work occasionally, but having an interventionist who is qualified at conducting such an event is a licensed professional that has been certified and skillfully trained to do this.  Another benefit is that the interventionist can teach the members of the group to remain calm, regardless of how the addicted individual reacts.

Team member requirements to consider

There are certain goals that the team members involved in an intervention need to be aware of, but the foremost consideration is the fact that they need to know how to tell the addicted individual how their self-destructive behavior has affected them personally.  And they need to do this calmly, kindly, and with love if they have any hope of reasoning with the individual.

Another goal that you want to accomplish through the intervention process is to point out various incidences that justify the necessity of treatment and recovery.  As a team member, you may have to issue an ultimatum which requires the addicted individual’s consenting to treatment.  Just remember that an intervention team member is similar to an employer who can make employment a condition of entering a treatment and recovery facility.

Additionally, you want to keep in mind that these ultimatums need to be voiced as kindly and respectfully as possible because this will most likely be an extremely emotional experience for the addicted individual.  People in the intervention group may also make future contact with them a condition of the intervention as well.  It’s called “tough love”, but it is necessary in most instances.
