Gambling Intervention
Despite the fact that a gambling addiction is not as serious as alcohol or drug addiction physically, it can still be extremely damaging from an emotional and mental standpoint, especially where family members, friends, and loved ones are concerned. In many ways, a gambling addiction is like an alcohol or substance addiction. Despite the fact that gambling to most individuals is a hobby of sorts, if left unchecked and out of control, it can be the driving force in an individual’s life and consume them just like alcohol and drugs.
Recognizing the “RED FLAGS”
In order to determine if a gambling intervention is necessary, you have to recognize the warning signs of it. The following is a list of what we consider to be the 6 major warning signs that point to a gambling addiction and the necessity of a gambling intervention:
Behavioral changes are the first clue – this is the primary way in which you can identify that any addiction may be present, whether it is gambling or substance-based
Catching the individual in a lie on a continual basis – this is one of the most obvious symptom that a gambling addiction is present and that a gambling intervention is warranted in order to help the individual
The gambling addict will sell their personal belongings for the sake of playing one more hand of Blackjack or putting one more coin in a slot machine – additionally, they may even start stealing to support their habit so watch for personal items mysteriously disappearing but you still need to be observing the person’s behavior without them being aware of what you are really doing
If you’re with this person when they gamble, see if they realize when to say “I’ve had enough” – it’s important to see if they are capable of exhibiting any restraints, because if they can’t walk away from a slot machine, card table, or sports betting area, there is a definite problem, especially if they bite off more than they can chew
See if you can determine if the individual is spending a lot of hours gambling online or leaving and being vague about where they are going and when they will return home. It’s a good idea to analyze the situation, especially if it seems to be more than a recreational activity
Keep a finely tuned ear – you want to stay alert and see if you can pick up what the individual discusses as priorities as well as watching their behavior patterns because they may be telling you that they have a problem and are reaching out to you for help
