Addiction Intervention

What is Addiction Intervention?

Addiction Intervention can be defined as an orchestrated counseling effort conducted by a licensed professional with family members, friends, and loved ones of an addicted individual who needs help and encourages them to search for it.  Normally, the terminology is used to describe circumstances relative to alcohol and drug addiction.  For all practical purposes, addiction interventions are supposed to be calm, realistic, and tender, by employing a relaxing dialogue that does not intimidate the addicted individual.

However, in blanket terms, it can also refer to any type of addiction that results in traumatic crises or events be they substance related or not.  Additionally, intervention may also refer to the use of certain methods and techniques during a counseling session.  These are commonly referred to as “Cognitive Interventions” in that they usually involve a specific set of psychological techniques and therapies.  Regardless of the type of addiction intervention required, it usually proves to be an important step in helping the addicted individual.

Direct and Indirect Addiction Intervention

With any type of addiction intervention that is required and used, please keep in mind that these interventions an be conducted in two different way – directly or indirectly.  The differences are as follows:

Direct Addiction Intervention – normally involves an in-person confrontational meeting between the addicted individual, family members, friends, loved ones, and a certified and licensed professional.

Indirect Addiction Intervention
– typically involves working with a family, who may be experiencing co-dependency issues, in order to encourage them to solve their issues by helping the addicted individual.

Today, there are two addiction intervention models that are the most commonly used in the US – A.R.I.S.E. and systemic.  They each have 2 significant aspects in common, including the following:

  1. They are both invitational types of approaches to addiction intervention
  2. They both rely extensively on having the addict’s family enter a recovery program

This is effective when it comes to removing the focus off the addicted individual and shifting it to making the family members and loved ones change so that everyone involved gets healthier as well – emotionally, mentally, and even physically.  Most importantly, both of these addiction intervention methods focus on treating the suffering individual with the utmost in dignity and respect.

Why is Our Addiction Intervention Program so Successful?

We are well aware that addiction intervention works.  The issue is that the addicted individual rarely accepts the fact that they have a problem and needs this.  Additionally, the addicted individual may have other deep-rooted issues that led to the addiction which are not easily to identify.  Finally, family members, friends, and loved ones are normally too close to the problem which typically prevents them from being of a benefit the individual.
